Why Hire A Professional: Florist

Remember this little mini-series?! I loved featuring talented & successful vendors & allowing them to share with you WHY it was so important to hire professionals for your wedding day! Amanda from Anthomanic is NO exception!!! We wanted to share this post a few weeks ago, but then she had a baby (Bane is the CUTEST) & we both got a little busy!! But I’m happy she was able to do today’s Q&A for you:)

Amanda is one of my closest friends in the industry. I LOVE her. Truly! I can’t tell you enough how much she has helped me in the last 2 years… from designing my own wedding flowers, to encouraging me to make DSE a reality, to answer every flower-related question I send her way… she has a big ol’ heart & I love her for it!!! Working with Amanda for my wedding was one of the best decisions I have ever made!!! She BLEW ME AWAY with her creativity & talent & she was SO helpful throughout the planning process. She’s a huge reason why I now offer In House Flowers for DSE Brides!! She’s the Queen of Flowers & if you still need a florist, email her:)

Tell me a little bit about yourself! How long have you been designing flowers? How long have you been in the wedding industry? I’ve been a floral designer for 13 years! I started at a grocery store flower shop as a teenager (you just calculated my age, didn’t you?!), and later when I graduated college and couldn’t break into the architectural design industry that I was trained for, I opened a retail floral shop. Because the wedding part of my business was doing so well, and it was my passion for customized, themed events, two years later I started specializing my business to design weddings only. I absolutely love the wedding industry – it’s fun to be apart of something so momentous (and aesthetically beautiful, to boot!)!

Kat, here – I am OBSESSED with this floral crown!!!

If you could design flowers for a wedding anywhere in the world, under any theme you want, where would you go and what theme would you use?! I just love all sorts of themes!! I have a passion for matching my craft to personality, colors and an overall theme. My style is characterized by lush, soft flowers in monochromatic palettes – a mixture of traditional meets contemporary in the styling and color. Although that’s the style I am known for, I’m also a sucker for anything Tim Burton-esque! I would love to have an unlimited budget for a Halloween theme wedding!! But, I’d also love to design a massive tropical inspired floral canopy in Bora Bora by the water!!

Quite a few brides try to cut costs & DIY their flower arrangements; why is it important for brides to hire a professional florist for their wedding day, rather than doing it themselves? Floral design can be surprisingly messy, time consuming & laborious! we get wedding flowers in on a Tuesday and Wednesday, and keep them fresh in a floral cooler while designing all week for a Saturday wedding. Designing an entire wedding usually take us a few days. Also, if you are designing at your home, keeping them fresh will be a challenge when you are juggling prepping for the wedding/honeymoon with a more limited time frame than a florist has. I have heard of so many DIY floral tragedies – from flowers dying to not ordering enough. I’m a designer and I didn’t even DIY my own wedding flowers!! What does that tell you?! Forget about getting your wedding manicure or being relaxed for your rehearsal or wedding day if you DIY!! … and I’m not saying this a sales pitch. This is just one of those things you really should hire someone to do if you are able to swing it. If it’s not in the budget, at least try to find family or friends that you trust to do it for you – or help you. Or ask the florist what you can do to get the best band fro your buck and how you can fit your budget! You might have to be flexible about flower types, but you never know how doable it can be! Just remember, you are spending a large chunk of money to have your wedding. Why would you want to ruin your enjoyment of your day because you had to play floral designer that week?

2014-08-10_0013.jpgWhen a bride contacts you, what is the process like? How do you work with her to develop a floral proposal? We start with an initial brief chat about the basics (overall floral types, amount of pieces, location, etc.) to provide a budget proposal, then once the bride is ready to bok, we sign a contract to provide our professional guarantee. We then setup their more detailed meeting to choose al the exact colors, flowers types, contain types, ribbon, etc.!

What is one tip you can give a bride about her wedding flowers?! I highly recommend doing larger WOW pieces (or just one!) than many tiny floral pieces (the little ones add up!). I am a sucker for a grand floral ceremony backdrop!! Things like a pergola draped and covered in florals, or some other large aisle pieces at the entry or down the aisle. Keep in mind a majority of your ceremony & family formals will be taken in the ceremony space… and your walls and albums will have shots of them! There’s something so “wedding” about an awesome ceremony piece! You may only be there a short amount of time compared to the reception, but just keep in mind that sooo many photos are taken here and will be taking up big real estate in your wedding album!!

Isn’t that pergola incredible?! AH! I can’t get over it!!!

Thanks for today’s post, Amanda!! Brides be sure to contact her if you still need a florist; and designers, if you’re interested in learning from the best of the best, sign up for her workshop today!!!
