As promised, here’s my second planner review for 2014 planners:)
(If you missed yesterday’s review, check it out here!)
Over the last year I have developed a love for any & all things Emily Ley. I just LOVE her heart, her products & her blog. I purchased the Simplified Planner in pink (now called the Simplified Life Binder) and use it for any & all things DSE – blog schedule, client info, contracts, vendor info, etc. It’s PERFECT for my business & I am so glad I caught it on sale when I did (a blog post about this is coming soon!).
When she announced the launch of the NEW Simplified Planner, my heart leaped! YES! It has the hour-by-hour I love, a To-Do section, Dinner section AND monthly tabs. It’s bright & cheerful, has a pocket in the front & gorgeous gold edges. I couldn’t hit “purchase” fast enough. For me, the price tag was worth a really, good planner.
When it came in the mail, everything I loved about it online, I loved in person. Yes, it is a larger than the Day Designer – it’s taller & thicker. However, because the pages are thicker, the planner itself has to be, too. I love the white pages, and simple layout of the monthly & daily pages, as well as her approach to simplicity in the front pages. She gives her users a 4 step approach to simplicity in 2014 (you can read my steps 1, 2 and 3 here); while also providing uplifting quotes on every daily view, and a “a happy memory” section on the shared weekend page.
SIMPLIFIED PLANNER PRO’S:
-pages in the front for “My Go-To Dinner Ideas”, “Memories to Make This Year” & “Process of Simplifying”
-durable & bright monthly tabs
-front pocket
-pink closure wrap
-the pages are pretty thick (great for most pens/highlighters/etc.)
-bright white pages
-“To-Do” section on shared weekend page
-all major Holidays are already filled in for you
-have an entire page dedicated to one day of the week (weekends share a page)
-has a to-do section on every page
-has a dinner section on every page
-has inspirational quotes throughout
-has a yearly view, monthly view & daily view
-contains a “how to use” (effectively) section in the front
-contains an hour-by-hour layout on shared weekend pages
-stylish front & back bright stripes
SIMPLIFIED PLANNER CON’S:
-yearly view is smaller, not able to write on it
-rings are a little large (although I think they have to be that big since the pages are thick)
-the shared weekend page is not broken down hourly like the weekdays; it just says “am, lunch, pm” on Saturdays & Sundays, and since my weekends are usually my busiest, I do wish it was broken down hourly.

A little comparison of The Day Designer & The Simplified Planner
All in all, they are both AMAZING; I would HIGHLY recommend Emily’s Simplified Planner OR Whitney’s Day Designer… but, obviously, you don’t need both:)! I firmly believe every woman needs an amazing planner in her life. I love the heart behind each one & how they push women to prioritize, organize & make life happen effectively & efficiently. I know I overanalyzed this decision, but there were so many amazing pros to BOTH planners that it was a hard choice for me!! And, I really do think a woman’s planner says a lot of about her and her vision for her life.
My choice? Emily’s Simplified Planner. I kept coming back to the simplicity of this planner! It’s full of so many thoughtful touches to help make your year organized & meaningful; I love the layout, the fonts used & the thick, white pages. I think the Day Designer is great for business owners who are looking to refine & renew their business. Although I am a business owner looking to do that, I felt a little overwhelmed with everything in the DD because I have Lara’s Powersheets. Both are GREAT tools, but I don’t think you have to have both in your life. For me, I needed one or other. (Again, you may be totally different – this is just how I felt!). And, although I love the hourly shared weekend page in the DD, and the larger yearly outlook, I decided the SP was the better choice for me.
I want to create a life full of simple meaning, and although it’s important to find your visions, purpose & define your brand, I wanted my planner to help constantly pull me back to what matters most in an organized & defined way. For you, that may mean that the DD is perfect! For me, the SP is functional, pretty & full of SIMPLIFIED details (do you like what I did there?!) so it’s the perfect fit for my 2014 year!
Whew. I hope between yesterday & today’s posts, you’ve been able to compare the two, and decide which one fits your life better (if either!). I am INCREDIBLY picky about my planners, so I think it says a lot that I would gladly recommend either one to you!
Do you have either one of these? What are your requirements for a planner?? Are you as picky as me?
xo, kat
(P.S. Shout-out to my Instagram-friend Taylor! She purchased both of these planners, too and we spent A LOT of time Facebook messaging our dilemma. She went with the DD & couldn’t be happier with her decision!!)
(( I was not contacted by Emily Ley or Whitney English to promote or review the Simplified Planner or the Day Designer. All thoughts & opinions are my own, and I was not compensated to give this review. ))
Girl these reviews are wonderful!! I sent my mom the Simplified Planner link the day they went on sale and she just gave it to me for Christmas. I’m SO excited about it and I can’t wait to start using it!! I’d never heard of Whitney English or her Day Designer before but your reviews were so helpful to compare the two! Overall I’m happy that I went with the SP, because it’s so bright and colorful and sometimes you just need that pop of color in your life!! 🙂
I’m so glad you liked them… and yes, I totally agree!! I love the bright & fun stripes of the SP:)
I bought both, too! I bought the day designer in august so I have been using it for a few months. I really liked it but found that I wasn’t utilizing a LOT of the extras and wished for things like tabs, a pocket, and a built in strap to hold it closed. (The simplified planner met all of that!) And I wish the day designer had the days of the week labeled on the monthly view. I like both, but I think the SP meets all of my wants!
Haha I’m glad I’m not the only one who had this dilemma!!!
You shared these posts at the perfect time! I was looking for a new planner for 2014 and I really enjoyed the options that you shared. I ended up ordering the SP based on your recommendations – thank you!
I’m so glad they helped you!!! And, I don’t think you’ll regret ordering the SP 🙂
Some how found your blog when searching for Emily Ley’s Simplified Planner…great review and insight!! I may just have to purchase 🙂 I also recognized you from Katelyn James’ blog??I’ve been following her blog for years!! Your wedding was one of my faves from her 2013 weddings!! ….I hope that’s not creepy for recognizing you…small world!
Hi Kate!! Small world!! I’m so glad you found my blog though 🙂 And, you should definitely order the SP!!! xo! kat
Hi Kat! Happy 2014! Thank you for such an honest, thoughtful review. It makes my heart full to its brim to know the Simplified Planner is doing exactly what we aimed for it to do – to help women just like you focus on what truly matters in life. Wishing you a 2014 overflowing with joy! xo Emily
Emily, thank you so much! And, thank you for an such amazing product!! Can’t wait to meet you at MTH this year:) xo! kat
Sooo by any chance are you selling the Whitney English?? Thanks for the review!!! It was great to see the two side by side!
No I’m not! But thanks for checking 🙂 I gave it to a friend for Christmas. Glad the review helped!! xo!
Thank you so much for reviewing both of these planners! I have already purchased my trusty gold leather planner I have gotten very year for about five years but when I saw these two I fell hard! The problem was however could I choose without feeling and using them for a short time? This is helpful and you have helped me settle on the SP! Looking forward to using it next year.
Thanks again!
I’m so glad this helped!! xo!!
I’ve been debating these planners for a while, and your great review has pushed me towards the Simplified Planner! It’s sold out now though! May I ask if you one you reviewed but aren’t using is available?
No, I do not have the Day Designer & I’m currently using the Simplified Planner! Thanks for checking out my blog, though! xo!!
[…] use my Simplified Planner for everyday use. I carry it with me pretty much everywhere I go, and use it to organize my busy […]
LOVE THIS! I have been using the Erin Condren Life Planner and have been loving it but as a doctoral student who needs more room to write and plan for my dissertation, teaching obligations, and my life I was so committed to getting a Simplified Planner. Then yesterday I stumbled upon the Day Designer and I have never been more torn in my entire life! Especially since the 2015 DD has tabs, gold corner protecters, a band for the black ones, and white pages! Your review was the most helpful thing i’ve found so far and I have browsed dozens of blog posts and videos about both planners. I think I will go with the DD because it can start in August which is perfect as a student to get an academic year panner.
I was looking at two different planners, and saw Emily’s mentioned and then your post to compare DD with SP. You did a great job in comparison and commenting that each planner works best for different people.
The post on the DD 2015’s added changes had me rethinking, but what led me back to Emily Ley’s are the scriptures and quotes and the thought she put into what she shared with us daily on the pages. Also just watching her video clips, I loved her spirit and heart, so that is why I will be purchasing a SP when the 2015 is released.
Again, thank you for sharing with us and how well you did in comparing the two for us. Susan
Can you tell me what this planner costs? It’s not available right now (so I can’t find the price), but I’d love to plan ahead to get one if it’s within my budget.
Mine was around $55! I’m not sure of the exact cost or how much it will be this year, but I can tell you that it is worth it!!!
Thank you!
Hi!!! Well, I thought I had decided on the Day Designer, but now I am totally rethinking this!!! It looks like both of these planners use the same hardware? If I could change one thing, I think it would be the rings. I do not like my erin condren, because it seems like it is made more for a stay at home mom, (morning, day, evening), but the rings on the erin condrin are a beautiful gold and they are rock solid. The Day Designer and this planner look like a darker color and like they could actually bend as well. If anyone could let me know about the sturdiness of the rings, I would really appreciate it 🙂
Elise
Nice reviews! I have the Simplified Planner and I’m loving it, but I am even more excited that she will now have a weekly planner. I travel for work so I need to keep up with appointments throughout the day, but I don’t need the hours listed out. Also, it started at 7am and I workout at about 6am every morning so I couldn’t write that down. I plan on ordering the weekly as soon as it’s released in Sept.! I considered the Day Designer but it’s just too big. And I don’t really need the worksheets in the beginning since I have Lara Casey’s powersheets. xoxo
Whew! This review was written so long ago but is still absolutely relevant.
Earlier this year I bought a Kikki.k planner and just like some other commentors mentioned, it doesn’t leave the house because its so pretty and I don’t want it to get dirty.
I just learned about the day designer yesterday and found your review, since I had the powersheets for 2014 but didn’t order them again for 2015 I think the Day Designer is going to be the one for me since it sounds like its a great combo planner for business and personal.
I also made my own tabs for the kikki k so I’ll probably do the same for the DD!
Thank you so much for your pros and cons list!
