Contentment Challenge: January

It’s here, it’s here!

January 1 has arrived. It’s a gorgeous day here in lil’ ol’ Timberville, VA. Our Christmas decor might still be up, my inbox might be crazy full & my Powersheets might not be complete but you know what? It’s January 1, 2017. And that’s something worth celebrating!

The Contentment Challenge is officially underway & I’m excited, terrified & a little unsure of how it’s all going to go. (If you missed my post about the Contentment Challenge you can view it here. You can also see my Guidelines & Goals here.)  And while I have so many doubts & fears about the next 6 months, I also have a sense of peace. My heart seems to echo the lyrics of this song:

“I can feel the rising of the sun
Mercy sings me the promise of Your love
And I’m reminded how far we’ve come
You’re the One that my heart is beating for… I’m waking up.” – Morning Song by Steffany Gretzinger

January is the month of GENEROSITY. Being thankful for what we do have & realizing that it’s enough – more than enough.  (Please note that in Nancy’s original challenge the first month is Gratitude, with the second being Generosity. I have decided to switch the order of those two challenges. I will focus on Generosity for January & Gratitude for February. My reason for doing this is simple: I want to purge what I have now, to focus on less is more & give freely of what I do not need. Then I want to focus on being thankful for what I DO have AFTER I have given freely!)

My Verse of the Month: Philippians 4:11-13

“…I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything with the One who makes me who I am.” (The Message)

“…for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content. I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (NKJV)

“…for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any & every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (ESV)

My Challenge for the Month: Purge, Give, Repeat. I will be focusing on purging & simplifying our home. The 3 key areas I will be focusing on will be: my clothes, our drink-ware (mugs, tumblers, I-have-too-many, etc.), our “junk room” (an entire room in our home filled with books, boxes & C@H shop  items). I did my clothes yesterday (yes, I cheated & started early); this week I will be doing our kitchen & over the next 2 weekends I will be doing our junk room. (I encourage you to mark your calendar with specific days you will do specific tasks! Don’t say “I will do it in January.” Write down WHEN you will do it so that it actually gets done!)

After the purging process, I will be giving my items to Goodwill. I am not selling my items. The purpose of this is to give freely – no eBay or Plato’s closet or Craigslist for me. (Example: Today I gave 2 bags of clothes to friends from church to look through; after they are done, it will all go to Goodwill.)

What I’m listening to: Steffany Gretzwinger, Lauren Daigle & Cageless Birds

What I’m reading: Wait & See by Wendy Pope & New Morning Mercies by Paul David Tripp (a daily devotional)

3 Personal goals for January: (1) Utilize my gym membership 4 days per week (2) Complete my Powersheets for January (3) Finish my background check & begin serving in Aletheia Jr (our church nursery/children’s church).

3 Business goals for January: (1) Organize my finances from 2016 so I am ready for taxes + set up for an organized 2017. (2) Complete the C@H website with With Grace & Gold (yay!) (3) Complete the Copyright Mastermind Program with Ashlyn (so, so excited!).

(If you’ve decided to join the challenge, please join our FB group here. We’d love to encourage you along the way!)
