Today’s Good Words post is a little bit different. In the spirit of Christmas, I wanted to share 25 days worth of Good Words: an Advent Calendar!
I know it’s already the 5th, so there’s only 20 days left of advent… but this calendar is beautiful, easy & perfect for your home so I just had to share it! Matt and I set it out last night and read days 1-4. You could easily do the same thing in your home, and then you have it ready to go for next year!
His mom gave us an advent countdown, and we LOVE it! It’s this adorable Charlie-Brown-looking-tree, complete with a Santa & a bag of presents. Every day leading up to Christmas, you hand a new ornament on the tree. Cute, right? We’ve loved starting this little traditional & the keepsake-lover in me can’t wait to see our kids do it (YEARS down the road, ha!). But as much as I love it, I wanted to have something that gave us a few minutes to read Scripture together. I wanted a conscious reminder of WHY Christmas is here, the true meaning for the season – Jesus.
I’ve said this before, but Instagram really is AMAZING. I’ve met SO many people & found so many cute things on that site! On Tuesday I saw a post about this free advent calendar. I found the source & immediately bookmarked her blog. Her work is BEAUTIFUL and I just love this advent calendar. The Scripture verses are spot on, they’re beautiful, easy to make and also easily customizable for whatever your style is (she splattered hers in gold paint; you can see the picture on her blog).
For ours: I printed them off front to back (numbers on one side, verse on the other) on white cardstock. I used a paper cutter (because I can’t cut a straight line to save my life) to cut them into various size rectangles/squares; I wanted their sizes to look “eclectic” vs. all the same. I then added various washi tape patterns, and used mini clothespins (from Michaels) to attach them to the garland on our stairs. It was SO EASY, y’all! In less than an hour I added a beautiful & DIY advent calendar to our home. Our plan is leave whatever day is it “verse-up” instead of “number up”, so that whenever we walk by it, we see the verse of the day.
I love this calendar because you can do SO MUCH with it. Not only can you add it to you garland, but you could string it inside an empty frame, make a vertical display by a doorframe or even put them in envelopes/bags to open along with candy every day. The options are endless AND since you print them yourself, you can make them your own with paint, glitter, washi tape or whatever your heart desires.
I’m so glad Chelsea posted this classic Christmas tradition, and I can’t wait to use it for years to come!
Do you have an advent calendar? Are you thinking of making this one? If you do, I’d love to hear/see how you did it!!
xo, kat
