Fear & Freedom

Fear and freedom.

These words continued to resonate with me from the very minute we set foot on Winshape for Pursuit. Actually, they’ve been speaking to my heart far before that moment (read this post) but I don’t think I’d taken the time to stand still & listen.

Fear is a funny, funny thing. It sneaks up on you when you least expect it. It lingers in the shadows, taunting you, reminding you, whispering to you. And I didn’t realize how much I had let fear take hold of my heart, my business & my life.

Hannah opened up the conference on Monday evening & she spoke so passionately about fear & just how we give it control in our lives. Throughout the rest of the retreat, I kept replaying her words in my head, realizing just how right they were in this season of my life.

She spoke four truths about fear:

  • Our fear is terribly unoriginal
  • Our fear is an overly jealous lover
  • We become comfortable with our fear
  • Fear is completely necessary (and acts as a catalyst to God)

It’s kind of ironic because we tend to live in fear of our fear. We don’t talk about it. We think our fear is ours alone. And because we keep quiet, because we don’t let anyone else in… it all but eats us alive.

The Lord kept subtly whispering another word to me throughout my time in GA: freedom.

Freedom might not be the polar opposite of fear, but for me, it signifies a right turn. A turn away from the fear that has been holding me back. A turn toward peace … a turn toward freedom.

I have spent the last few months holding my business so tightly in my hands. Clenching them, really. Holding my hands so tightly fisted and making decisions as if I was the only one in control; I forgot one simple thing. I forgot to unclench my fingers, open my hand, and give my business to Jesus. Sleepless nights thinking I was in control; anxiety over business decisions because I felt the sheer weight of every single one. That was not why I started my business, and that way NOT the Lord’s will for my life. He does not call me to life in fear… He calls me to life in FREEDOM.

Attending Pursuit was the best decision I could have made for this season of my life. The Lord changed my heart so radically, and while the fear is there (and will always, always linger), He reminded me so kindly how much He loves me, died for me & calls me to a life of Freedom in Him.
