Mission Statements aren’t supposed to be scary … but sometimes they feel scary.
We ask things like:
- How do I summarize everything I want my biz to represent in one simple statement?!
- How do I know what to include?
- How do I even know where to begin?!
They can seem too vague. too detailed, too aloof … too MUCH. They’re a bit more abstract & because of that we tend to put them on the back-burner.
We decide we’ll get to it later… only later never comes.
Mission Statements don’t have to be scary. I want them to be EASY.
First things first, whatever you do, don’t be afraid of finality. This is YOUR mission statement for YOUR business … that means you can tweak it as your brand evolves! Nothing is ever “final” … your company will change & grow & that’s a GOOD thing!! Having a Mission Statement will allow you to grow with the same vision in mind.
You’re going to be faced with a lot of decisions about the growth of your company: What additional revenue streams should I add? Should I rebrand? Do I still love what I do? Why am I doing what I’m doing?
Your Mission Statement can & should be the ONE PLACE you look when you’re struggling to keep the blinders on, stay in your lane & do your thing.
We get so worried about seeing our mission, our values, our heartbeat in black & white that we never give it a chance to see the light of day. Don’t do that here.
I want you to get out a pen, grab your notebook & start WRITING. Read each point below & don’t think – just write. Let your brain run wild with #allthethings & don’t overthink it.
- Define your why. Why are you doing this? Why are you choosing to do this as the BOSS vs. working for someone else?
- What’s the problem? What’s the problem your services or products are addressing? (Ex. a bride is overwhelmed with the stress of planning her wedding)
- Give me the solution. What’s the solution your offer? Make sure it addresses the problem stated above! (Ex: offering various wedding planning packages to ease bride’s stress)
- Who cares? Who is your ideal client? WHY does she/he care about the solution?
- What can only YOU do? What are you biz boasts & biz loves? What do YOU bring to the table that is unlike your competitors?
Answering these five questions will allow you to pin point you what, why, where & how and therefore create a mission statement for your business that embodies all the things your business represents.
Do you have a mission statement? Leave it in the comments below!!
